Tiny Native Ecosystems

by Sari Pastore

In Kapaʻa town, in the old Otsuka's building, Understory Alliance has just concluded a project celebrating biodiversity. Imagine a blank canvas steeped in heritage, now adorned with ceramic containers brimming with native Hawaiian plants. How did we weave this botanical tapestry, you wonder? Let me take you through the journey of our recent adventure.

The Plan

Our mission was ambitious yet purposeful—to design, procure, and install 12 (I threw in one extra, too) ceramic planted containers. Six graced the primary entrance, standing as floral sentinels, while another six embraced the rear access, offering a verdant welcome. Each container was destined to be a haven for carefully chosen native plants appropriate to the coastal Kapaʻa landscape.

But this was a more complex case of potting plants. Crucially, our layout design was more than aesthetic —it was a carefully choreographed plan prioritizing accessibility and safety. The strategic placement of each container ensures a seamless flow, preventing obstacles. Our commitment goes beyond the visual; it's about creating an environment that welcomes everyone, regardless of their physical abilities. And we had to do it in almost no time at all.

The Evolution

The transformation unfolded in less than a week—13 containers, each a tiny, vibrant ecosystem with native Hawaiian plants. Given the scarcity of pots on the island, we adapted what we could find with paint and sandpaper. This softened the pots' appearance and ensured they harmonized with the coastal surroundings, embracing the wear and tear as a testament to their resilience.

Sourcing the right native plants turned into an impromptu adventure. While my nursery grows native plants, only some were ready for outplanting. Cue a last-minute plant scavenger hunt at local nurseries, where creativity met necessity.

Against all odds, these tiny native plant habitats are a testament to nature's resilience and our ability to turn constraints into flourishing triumphs.

Why Tiny Spaces and Container Gardening?

Because even in the tiniest nooks, a riot of biodiversity can thrive. Containers aren't just decorative but microcosms of Kauaʻi's rich ecological diversity. Container gardening, in essence, celebrates life's resilience, proving that even in confined spaces, nature can unfold its wonders.

How You Can Join In

Thinking of bringing native Hawaiian plants to your space? Start with container gardening! Select containers that suit your style, adapt existing ones, or get creative with upcycled options. Source native plants appropriate to your climate and conditions from local nurseries or participate in community plant swaps. Not only do you contribute to biodiversity, but you also create a vibrant, eco-friendly oasis.

Understory Alliance showcases the joy of orchestrating plant symphonies in the unlikeliest spaces. Stay tuned for more tales from the tiny, green side of life.

In the meantime, we offer both Biocultural Conservation Landscape Design and personalized Consulting Services. We take the time to understand your unique needs, assess your existing situation, and provide practical recommendations combining traditional ecological knowledge, scientific expertise, and community engagement to develop ecologically resilient and culturally meaningful landscapes.
