Join Understory Alliance in partnership with Kauaʻi Community College’s Office of Continuing Education and Training for a hands-on Flower Pounding Workshop.
You’ll make a vibrant pareo or kitchen towels with plant pigments. This creative, approachable activity blends art and nature while deepening your connection to the plants around us.
What You’ll Learn
How to use flowers and leaves to create colorful, lasting prints on cotton fabric.
What to Expect
Hands-On Creativity: Make and take home a pareo or two custom flour sack kitchen towels.
Natural Inspiration: Work with plants like Ilima, Hibiscus, and Ferns.
Guided Process: Step-by-step help arrange, secure, and transfer plant pigments.
What to Bring
Plants: If you have plants you’d like to try, feel free to bring them! Hibiscus works particularly well for this activity.
Tools (Optional): You are welcome to bring a hammer or an iron to use during the workshop.
Water Bottle: Stay hydrated!
Ear Protection: If you are sensitive to sound, we recommend bringing earplugs to minimize noise during the hammering portion.
Clothing: Comfortable clothes that can get messy and an open mind!
